Der Forscher Overgard (Mads Mikkelsen) befindet sich nach einem Flugzeugabsturz in der Eiswüste der Arktis in aussichtsloser Lage. Er ist zwar nicht großartig verletzt, aber Hilfe ist weit und breit nicht in Sicht. Zu Fuß einen Weg zu suchen, wäre ohne Landkarte Selbstmord. Er ernährt sich von geangeltem rohem Fisch und gibt seine Versuche nicht auf, mit der Außenwelt in Kontakt zu treten. Behelfsmäßigen Unterschlupf findet er in dem Flugzeugwrack. Als bei einem schweren Sturm ein chinesischer Hubschrauber auf Erkundungsflug vor seiner Nase abstürzt, verkompliziert sich die Lage. Die junge Co-Pilotin (Maria Thelma Smaradottir) überlebt den Crash schwer verletzt, während ihr Kompagnon ums Leben kommt. Overgard nimmt sich der Frau an und versucht sie aufzupäppeln, doch sie erlangt nur sporadisch das Bewusstsein und droht zu sterben – aber immerhin zieht er aus dem havarierten Hubschrauber einige nützliche Ausrüstungsgegenstände.
