La vicenda del film si svolge a Venezia, una Venezia del tempo fascista alla vigilia della dichiarazione della seconda guerra mondiale. E' la storia di un anziano professore inglese, direttore della Biennale d'arte, e della sua giovane moglie Teresa. Ambedue sono alla ricerca del proprio "io" nel loro rapporto sessuale. Un giorno il marito lascia di proposito sul pavimento del suo studio la chiave che apre il cassetto in cui tiene nascosto il diario ove egli narra le sue lussuriose fantasie. Teresa, per caso, trova la chiave, apre il cassetto e si impossessa del diario. Lo legge ed è spinta, a sua volta, a scriverne uno suo in cui anch'essa confessa tutta la sua passione amorosa e gli inganni che essa consuma insieme al giovane fidanzato della figlia.
